Today's 18 miles were much easier than yesterday. There was a nice climb
up to the summit of Stratton Mountain at the beginning of
the day. As I drove to the beginning
trailhead, this is a view of the ski slopes on
Stratton:
At the summit of Stratton is an interesting plaque that
describes how the idea of the Appalachian Trail was first conceived on that
spot in 1921:
My worries about the flooding that I stated in last
night's post were for naught. A
re-routing had been clearly marked around the flooding:
This was good as the water was over one foot deep for a
couple of hundred yards due to beavers having raised the level of their
dam. That would have made the remaining
10 miles after that stretch much more uncomfortable in soaking wet boots.
All in all the terrain was much easier today. I was hiking by 7am and was off the trail by
2:15, back at the truck at 3pm, and back in Eliot, Maine by 7pm.
